Title: Communications & Media Specialist
Job Type: Full-time

An Indianapolis-based national property/casualty insurance trade association is searching for a communications/media specialist.  The successful incumbent will have demonstrable skills and two to five years of professional experience in communications and media relations.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Media research
  • Identify opportunities to disseminate news and information about the mutual insurance industry to a wide variety of audiences
  • Investigate media outlets and reporters to identify targets for media outreach on key insurance industry topics
  • Provide daily tracking of local, national, and international coverage of specific issues and topic areas
  • Conduct daily monitoring of media outlets and their coverage on a variety of issues through traditional and electronic means for inclusion in a daily member publication as well as to generate new story angles
  • Media outreach
  • Pitch story ideas to appropriate media via phone, email and Twitter;
  • Draft news releases, media statements, pitch letters, op-eds;
  • Coordinate with corporate and government affairs departments in responding to inquiries from the media; facilitate contacts between media and association spokesperson on specific issues and topics
  • Writing/editing/other research
  • Draft news releases and media statements
  • Assist in researching topics for magazine articles
  • Write articles for quarterly member magazine
  • Write and/or edit convention and other member development materials
  • Edit/proof executive correspondences, speeches, policy papers
  • Assist in the development of content for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, English or related discipline from an accredited university or college
  • Two to five years of experience in a media/public relations environment, including experience working with media at the local, regional, trade and/or national levels strongly preferred
  • Strong writing/editing/proofing skills
  • Working knowledge of the AP Stylebook
  • Detail oriented

Excellent compensation and benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; a matched 401(k); and a generous vacation package. The salary range is $50,000 to $60,000 annually, depending on experience.
