Communicating the COVID-19 Vaccine: A conversation with Jeni O’Malley, Indiana Department of Health

As Indiana prepared to begin its COVID-19 vaccine rollout, state health officials were tasked with developing an effective communications plan to provide the public with vital information regarding vaccine logistics, eligibility and safety. Learn about the planning and preparation that went into the Indiana Department of Health’s communications strategy for its COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan – “It’s Our Shot, Hoosiers” – during our conversation with Jeni O’Malley, the Indiana Department of Health’s deputy chief of staff & chief communications officer.

We’ll discuss details on the state’s vaccine rollout strategy, dealing with misinformation and the department’s ongoing communications efforts.

About our speaker:

Jeni O’Malley, Indiana Department of Health’s deputy chief of staff & chief communications officer

Jeni has led the Indiana Department of Health’s internal and external communications efforts since 2015, overseeing successful efforts to manage community crises over lead poisoning and childhood cancer, build awareness of the Zika virus and educate hard-to-reach populations about a hepatitis A outbreak. For the past year, her primary focus has been on educating Hoosiers about the constantly changing COVID-19 pandemic, working with partners at the local, state and federal levels to ensure that the right message reaches the right people at the right time. She is a member of the executive board of the National Public Health Information Coalition and is the organization’s incoming president.

Steve Cooke, Director of Communications at Indiana State Medical Association

Steve Cooke - moderator Steve Cooke leads public relations and strategic communications for the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA), the largest physician organization in the state dedicated to improving the health of Hoosiers through physician leadership, advocacy, education and other member services. Previously, Cooke served as deputy mayor for the City of Noblesville and was vice president of Bose Public Affairs Group where he led strategic communications for clients on a wide range of issues at the local, state and national level using strategies in PR, social media, advocacy and stakeholder engagement. He holds a master’s degree in public relations management from IUPUI and a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Michigan State University.
