Description:

Promotes the state’s economic development programs, services and accomplishments in partnership with Indiana businesses and regional and local economic development organizations across the state. Responsible for ensuring the IEDC is represented often and accurately in state, regional, national and international media. The position will identify and execute on proactive opportunities to tell Indiana’s story and coordinate media coverage for the agency.

  • Plan, coordinate and execute press events with state and IEDC officials, working with private sector counterparts to announce new businesses to Indiana, cut the ribbon on business expansions, and communicate new job commitments across the state
  • Serve as a primary agency spokesperson and media liaison, rapidly responding to press stories and inquiries
  • Develop and execute strategies to promote Indiana’s business climate to in-state, out-of-state and international media outlets
  • Proactively pitch news and feature stories and editorials to state, national and international media to gain maximum exposure and interest in IEDC’s initiatives
  • Plan, research and develop public relations activity through print, radio, television and web media
  • Develop press materials, including news releases, advisories, editorials and related communications
  • Assist with speech writing and talking points for agency executives
  • Maintain communications with local economic development officials and other key stakeholders
  • Maximize social media and online tools to more effectively communicate with press
Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or related field.
  • 5-7 years related professional work experience; time spent in the private sector or working for private sector businesses at an agency is preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with and pitching various media outlets in Indiana, across the U.S. and internationally, as well as trade publications and freelance reporters. Professional working relationships with journalists in one or more of the IEDC’s key markets a plus
  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects to meet both internal and external deadlines, and perform other work-related duties as assigned
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and work effectively under pressure
  • Proficient in business and technical writing, writing for the media, copy editing and verbal communications

Knowledge of:

  • News media, news structure and ethics, journalistic techniques, terminology and AP Style
  • Public affairs relative to economic development a plus

Ability to:

  • Travel across the state for media opportunities as needed (Up to 30%)
  • Work in a highly-collaborative environment, managing input and feedback from numerous sources and partners
  • Excel in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships
  • Prioritize multiple projects
  • Handle stressful situations in a tactful manner
  • Maintain confidentiality
