POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Communications and Digital Media will develop and lead a creative communications strategy for the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) and AFA Foundation; this includes managing the Association’s mass and targeted communications, utilizing their knowledge of design to create print and digital (web-based, social media, and video) materials, and ensuring all content advances the brand of the Association and Foundation. This professional should have an understanding of current strategic communications, a working knowledge of print and digital design, and the ability to manage multiple platforms that assist in the execution of the Association’s and Foundation’s communication strategies.

The ideal candidate is able to approach communications in a creative way that showcases the fraternity/sorority profession and the efforts of the Association and Foundation to elevate the fraternity/sorority profession. Candidates should be able to flourish in a fast-paced, ever changing environment. They must show the ability to be nimble in working with members and fellow team members, exercising strong conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Individuals who will be successful in this position are creative and able to anticipate changes in communication trends/preferences to keep the organizations current. Ability to prioritize projects and handle multiple tasks is also a required skill set. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

25% – Association/Foundation Communications: Manage the electronic communications for the Association and Foundation including the Association’s monthly update, Foundation updates, and both mass and targeted updates on programs and initiatives.

20% – Social and Digital Media: Manages and directs the Association’s social media efforts as a function of the larger communications strategy.

20% – Design and Production: Coordinate the design and production of print materials, digital publications/papers  and, when appropriate, video materials that complement the communications of the Association and Foundation. Develop branded content for the Association’s larger programs including but not limited to the Association’s Annual Meeting. Assist in scripting and staging for larger programs.

15% – Publications Management: Manage (including design and distribution) the Associations publications (Essentials monthly digital newsletter, Perspectives quarterly magazine, and Oracle research journal). Serve as the staff liaison for the Association’s publication editorial boards. Assist in the design of reports for the Association and Foundation.

10% – Website and Email Management: Manage and update the Association and Foundation’s website in concert with our Association Management System. Manage and respond to general Association inquiries through the Association’s main email address.

10% – Teamwork and Collaboration: Work with other members of the Association central office team. Connect with other association staff and external stakeholders when appropriate. Give and receive feedback as part of a team and incorporate that feedback into the work. Provide on-site support to Association programs when appropriate.

Qualifications:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, design, journalism, or related field;
  • Three or more years experience in communications, design, and digital or social media, preferably in a higher education, fraternity/sorority, or association environment;
  • Working knowledge of the larger higher education and fraternity/sorority industries;
  • Strong experience with design and ability to successfully navigate publishing/design software;
  • Demonstrated experience with coordinating mass communication and managing mass communication platforms (Emma, Constant Contact);
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media platforms and social media engagement;
  • Commitment to customer service.
Compensation Range: $47,500 - $52,500
