Director of Communications and Resource Development

The Director of Communications and Resource Development provides leadership, management, and execution of donor cultivation and stewardship, marketing and communication that furthers the organization’s mission to bring the arts to local school communities to champion creative learning, innovate education, and transform lives. In this role, you will direct all individual fund development and awareness-building activities to achieve short- and long-term strategic goals. Plan, manage, and execute initiatives to create meaningful engagement experiences for all Arts for Learning (AFL) audiences by demonstrating the impact of individual giving and deepening donor relationships. In collaboration with the AFL team, draft and manage budgets in relation to creating external communication pieces including print, video, social media, and email. Work with the President and the AFL team to strengthen the organization’s leadership role in the field of arts education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Donor Relations (50%)
Supported by the President and Board of Directors Development Committee, develop and manage all donor relations and fundraising activities for contributed income including, direct mail, online, in-kind, special events, and affiliate group programs. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Direct the conceptualization, design and implementation of fundraising systems, strategies, and campaigns, including individual giving, direct mail and electronic appeals, electronic giving.
- Serve as a key member of AFL development staff, influencing and driving strategy regarding donor relations (portfolio of approximately 150 donors): prospect identification, donor pipeline development, prospect research and relationship management throughout the donor lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain a stewardship plan for all levels of giving including donor thank you phone calls, written gift acknowledgement, events, donor giving societies, etc.
- Establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with individual donors.
- As directed by Director of Corporate & Foundations Relations, collaborate with Board of Directors and all admin and program team members to identify funding opportunities, build relationships with prospects, and solicit funds and in-kind support from private individual sources.
- Assist in building volunteer committees; collaborate with the Development Committee/ Task Force to accomplish the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.
- Effectively collaborate with the Director of Corporate & Foundations Relations to ensure consistent messaging, efforts, and internal processes.
- Support all fundraising efforts as directed.
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan including branding and other marketing and communication tools to achieve the organization’s strategic goals. Develop and manage outreach efforts, including communications, marketing, advocacy, and business development opportunities. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Direct the creation and execution of an annual marketing and media relations plan for AFL’s target audiences
- Promote marketing and fundraiser events
- Publicize major gifts and grants, programs, and outcomes
- Manage marketing deliverables as directed by grants/sponsorships
- Promote support for and visibility of the organization through ongoing communication with schools, government, and arts personnel, through representation of the organization at key community events and initiatives, and media opportunities.
- Coordinate philanthropic impact initiatives including videos, testimonials, print, and email pieces.
- Oversee research, development, and maintenance of presence on effective electronic media platforms including website and social media. Maintain, update, and grow engagement through social media channels.
- Create content, and produce newsletters, e-news articles/blog, press releases, annual report, and other marketing collateral.
- Provide public relation support in conducting research, assisting with media outreach, maintaining media lists and developing/tracking calendar of events.
- Develop a clear and concise message/content to tell the Arts for Learning story, ensuring all marketing materials enhance our brand.
- Coach staff, board members, and volunteers to tell our story consistently and effectively.
- Be the point of contact and manage the board of directors Marketing Committee.
- Provide and/or participate in face-to-face presentations for corporations, service organizations, volunteer groups, and others on behalf of the organization.

About Arts for Learning: Founded in 1961, Arts for Learning, the Indiana Affiliate of Young Audiences, empowers children to achieve their creative and intellectual potential through arts in education. - Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, arts management, or related field
- Five or more years of experience in fund development and/or donor relations
- Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Wix, Wordpress, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, Adobe Suite, Google Adwords, and social media platforms
- Experience in arts or arts education field preferred
- Excellent communication skills – oral, written, and digital
- Highly organized with the ability to meet multiple deadlines
- Proven track record for building relationships with donors and community stakeholders
- Knowledge of data-driven decision-making tactics and assessment and evaluation tools for continuous operational improvement
- Some evenings and weekends required as needed based on special events schedule
